Urban Sketchers of San Miguel de Allende
Urban Sketchers of San Miguel de Allende
Fabrica Art Walk

Patty McBratney

To kick off the new year the Urban Sketchers of San Miguel de Allende were invited to partake in the ambiance of Fabrica Aurora's January Art Walk... and what a lovely evening it was. The group of sixteen sketchers set up inside the entrance to the Aurora, many with front-row seats to the exciting performances by lively musical trios. The art of drawing an event in real time is certainly challenging, and but also exciting, because we get to practice our drawing skills, while attempting to hold conversations and soak up the ambiance. The drawings represent a moment in time that has passed, but is captured in a drawing forever.

The Urban Sketchers are a dedicated group of sketchers, and we look forward to seeing more of San Miguel de Allende, one drawing at a time. Stop by and say hello next time you see us on the streets.

The Gang

It's about being present, and for the Urban Sketchers of San Miguel de Allende, we capture the everyday scenes in and around town in our sketchbooks, and then share our work online. We are a group of dedicated sketchers, meeting each Tuesday to practice our art and share ideas, and recently San Miguel was named a Regional Chapter of the world-wide sketching community, "Urban Sketchers." It's a volunteer group with no official members, only those interested in sketching the world around them, one drawing at a time.

In addition to the weekly sketch group, the USk-SMA also meet at monthly Sketch Events, and this month we spent an afternoon at Via Organica's Rural Mercado (first Sunday of each month.) This was our first official USk event, planned by administrators Susan Dorf, Judy Plummer and myself, Meagan Burns, and we had a lovely afternoon sketching the sights, food and people of the colorful mercado. Our gracious hosts provided a table for our sketchbooks and water colors, and our group of about ten artists moved about the mercado, sketching the everyday as it unfolded in front of us. It's a great way to practice your drawing skills, grow confidence in your style and get plugged into a global community, so we may welcome other artists who visit our town.
